“Sex Addiction” | Out of Control Sexual Behavior
We use a non-twelve step approach that is strength-based, supportive and non-shaming. We treat the individual, and when appropriate, the couple. We take a holistic approach focused on treating the underlying cause to help create sustainable change. Our goal is to help individuals and couples move towards healthy sexuality, connection and intimacy.
Out-of-control sexual behavior can take many different forms. Regardless of which form it takes, the impact can cause excruciating pain for everyone involved.
Do you struggle with?
- Obsessive sexual thoughts
- Porn use that feels out of control
- Feels like you’re white-knuckling
- You have tried unsuccessfully to change multiple times over many years
- You have hurt people you love
- You have spent too much money
- Your relationship is in jeapordy
- Your partner feels betrayed
- Lack of trust is impacting your relationship
Non-12 Step Approach
Our approach is a strength-based, non-shaming, non-12-step approach. At the Cannon Institute, we help clients to address sexual behavior that most often is described to us as feeling out-of-control. Our approach has been honed by Dr. Cannon over the last two decades. We have helped countless people change their life and their relationships.
Clients
- Straight and gay men who have sexual behaviors that are out of control. Gay and straight men each have similarities however as a group, there are also significant differences.
- Women who have sexual behavior that feels out of control.
- Couples where there has been a betrayal and/or a violation of trust.
- Gender variant and gender non-conforming clients.
- Teens & adolescents are welcome.
History & Treatment
It is very common to see that almost 75% of all self-identified sex addicts we have treated have underlying mental health conditions and/or untreated trauma, abuse and bullying in their history. Therefore, it is so important to conduct a thorough assessment of each person so we treat the whole person, not just the undesirable behavior.
We have a two-step parallel process to help people start to improve immediately while also providing a process that sets each individual up for long-term improvement and sustainable change. Step 1: We start by conducting a comprehensive assessment. Step 2: We provide each client with early-stage interventions so they can start taking action during their first session. This is an approach we have found to be effective over a long period of time that is the most likely to create sustainable change.
We have the team available to treat the individual with out-of-control sexual behavior but also the partner who is suffering through betrayal and often imaginable pain. Couples counseling is often needed and also an important part of healing and our team is trained to provide this as part of our counseling plan.

Starting Your Process of Change
For many people, the best path to healing includes individual counseling for each person involved as well as couples counseling; and in some cases psychiatry and medication management. At that first session we can help you determine what you need and provide referrals to other highly qualified strength-based, non-shaming, supportive clinicians.
